Attacking a crowd

A covert ops lies within your crosshairs. You’re a medic. You lick your chops. Easy kill. You run towards him, hoping for a clear head shot. He hears your foot steps, scurries away. Should have shot him earlier. You pursue. He turns the corner, you follow. Then, a big surprise stops you dead in your tracks. Around the corner are three of his friends, armed and ready to riddle you with bullets. Instead of being the predator, you are now the prey. May God’s grace be on your side as the first bullet comes your way.

Attacking a crowd is perhaps the toughest thing to do in Wolfenstein. Anyone can win a duel but clearing a room of three or four men is the stuff legends are made of. How well you attack crowds will ultimately determine whether you are just a good player or great player. It’s not a necessary skill, and definitely not advised at times, but nothing is greater than seeing a medic clean house.

The first thing when dealing with a crowd is to determine if it’s possible to escape or not. Generally speaking, your odds are not good when you’re outnumbered. Don’t fight unless you have to. Most of the time, you can get away. The basic idea is that when you run, not all of them will pursue at once. You then want to pick them off one by one as they pursue. This greatly increases your chance of killing all of them.

If for some reason you cannot escape, then determine who you’re fighting against and how many of them there are. If there is a panzer or MG42 in the crowd, take them out first. These guys kill in a hurry. You won’t stand a chance unless they are out of the way. After that, who you take out next depends upon many factors.

A good rule of thumb is that you always want to take out the weakest guy first. The reason being is that you will probably die so take down whatever you can with you. The weakest players are usually the covert ops or the engineers. Kill them before gunning for the medics.

The one possible exception to this rule is if the crowd consists of only two guys, one being a medic or expert player, and the other being a noob. If you notice that the noob is not hitting you at all with his aim, you might want to concentrate on the medic/expert instead. If you can take down the medic, then the noob should be easy. You should only try this strategy if you are confident you can kill the medic. Otherwise, kill the noob.

As you clear the crowd one by one, see if you can run away and refresh your health and ammo. Sometimes as the crowd gets smaller, it’s easier to run away. When you’re feeling better, come back for more! Always make sure your feet are moving and if you run out of ammo in your pistols, don’t bother reloading. Take out your grenade and try to suicide bomb them.

You won’t always succeed in killing a whole crowd of men but on the occasion that you do, you can thump your fist on your chest because you’ve accomplished a feat very few players can do. Consider yourself a bad ass.
